This week’s sex research conference

This week I’m in San Juan, Puerto Rico for a sex research conference – specifically, the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. The conference began today and already I attended an interesting presentation about the changing perceptions of personal lubricants, presented by Dr. Sandra Leiblum. Though I’ve conducted research related to women’s and men’s use of personal lubricants, I am always happy to learn about others’ perspectives and Dr. Leiblum certainly delivered. She is a very well-respected sex therapist and shared interesting insights about her experiences recommending lubricants to couples. I’m glad that I went.

Oh, and guess what? Allison Janney (she played CJ Cregg from West Wing, the catatonic neighbor mom from American Beauty, and the step mom in Juno) was staying at my hotel! I saw her this morning when I was coming back to my room from a morning workout. I wanted to walk up to her and tell her how much I admire her work, but then I thought it would be better to let her enjoy her stay. I’m sure she gets tons of people coming up to her. She was absolutely beautiful in person, even without any apparent make-up on.

Tomorrow is a full day at the meeting and I’m looking forward to learning more about sexuality.
