I find this interesting because Danica McKellar (Winnie Cooper from the Wonder Years and now on Facebook) received a PhD in mathematics and has made 3 books to inspire girls to learn math and become engineers, scientists, etc. Yet, she also did one smokin hot photo shoot for Stuff. (Yes. I mean smokin hot.) She recently just did another photo shoot for Maxim. I believe that she is playing the angle that female scientists don't have to be frumpy. She received a lot of comments of support for the photo shoot but she also did get negative comments about sending a message of sexualization to girls. Like, yeah you can be an engineer / scientist which is a fascinating field and pays lots of money but don't forget the lingerie photos as well.

Personally, I think that bikini photos are hotter than the lingerie photos in the Miss USA. I think it was a step in the wrong direction as I feel that it sends a message that they are desperate due to declining viewers. And it won't help.

But really, the 'you have to be pretty' thing has permeated everything stating with teen novels. Have you EVER seen the cover of a teen novel where the girl isn't slender, pretty or ravishing? And romance novels are the same way. Designed by women, for women.
