Making Your Professor Blush?

I’m a little biased. I think that this is one of the best sites/blogs about sexuality. That said, there are still lots of other blogs I regularly enjoy reading, and Eden Cafe is one of them. A recent blog post from lunaKM called “A Little Too Revealing: How to Make a Professor Blush” caught my attention.

I initially wondered what it would take to make me blush when I’m teaching (I teach Human Sexuality at a university), and I think very little would – and that alone made me keep reading. The author had a Yahoo group where she shared nude photos of herself, stories, and talked with users, and she also bartered photos for sex (considering herself to be a “prostitute even though money wasn’t in the transaction”). She discusses all of this in a positive manner that I truly appreciate. However, as many friends and acquaintances of mine have shared, sometimes you run into someone who knows you from your sex work job. That’s not always a great experience. Heck, I’ve found it awkward to run into people outside of my old bartending job (while not sex work, I was definitely fitting into a certain role).

LunaKM was a student at the time, and you can probably tell where her story is going. During a summer class, she tried to figure out why her professor kept staring at her. Then she figured it out: he knew her from her group. She ended up talking to him briefly about it, and asked him to not tell the Dean (which he agreed to). She realized he wouldn’t, as it would also mean explaining how he knew she was in that group.

That story reminds me of two different friends’ stories – one was a dominatrix and another was a stripper. The dominatrix volunteered on a congressional campaign, and at a fundraiser realized that another well-known politician was a regular client of hers. After a brief freak-out session in the restroom, she realized that (per usual) she still had the power. If she made any mention to him in front of others, that meant he would be outed. Instead, she introduced herself, shook his hand, his wife’s hand, and later gave him a quick wink and a smile. She told me that he was very relieved at their next session.

As for my stripper friend (and classmate at the time), she happened to run into her professor at her job. She said it was dark, and she started to get a client’s attention . . . and realized that it was her professor! They were both a little freaked out, and neither of us think that he really looked at her exams for the rest of the semester.
