Genitals in the Wild: The Vulva on a Manhole Edition

Today when I was walking to class, I stumbled upon this little gem on campus. I’m not quite sure what exactly a “vulva at work” means, or what this is supposed to represent, but regardless, it’s awesome. I knew I had to post it- especially since two friends texted me this picture within the span of an hour, thinking it was blogworthy (one also thought I had put it there)! Anne Frank’s Edited Anatomy

In all the places to find interesting sex-positive talk, I was informed of this link while listening to SModcast with Kevin Smith.  He and his hetero-lifemate Scott Mosier expressed their disappointment in our society for the censorship that we feel we need to impose on our children, including basic anatomy talk from a famous teenaged figure.  This from the guys who made “Clerks.” The body talk in Anne Frank’s diary is an older story (the content discussed was first published in 1995), but resurfaced two years ago when parents in a Virginia middle school were complaining about the “explicit sexual content” in this classic piece of literature. Reproduced here is the “explicit sexual content.” “…Until I was eleven or twelve, I didn’t realize there was a second set of labia on the inside, since you couldn’t see them. What’s even funnier is that I thought urine came out of the clitoris…When you’re standing up, all you see from the front is hair. Continue Reading →

What’s So Bad About Bush?

A few weeks ago, I was at a party at another women’s college. I ended up meeting an art major named Mac, who brought up the topic of pubic hair in conversation (and as I’m sure you can imagine, it’s not the first time this has been discussed at a queer gathering). She told me about a recent piece she had been working on (which can be found below) of a woman with her organs exposed. Though not the main point of her piece, all anyone could focus on was the fact that the woman in the painting had a fairly visible mound of pubic hair. Mac was complaining to me about the amount of negative feedback she received based on the bush. Continue Reading →

Machine That Allows Men To “Menstruate”

Hiromi Ozaki, a Japanese-British artist who often focuses on gender roles and boundaries in her art, recently designed a “Menstruation Machine”. The machine is meant to be worn around the torso like a heavy belt so that men can experience that terrible pain that women have to endure once a month. The machine actually stimulates abdominal pain that is supposedly similar to cramps, though I can’t imagine it really feels the same. It also releases the same amount of blood (colored liquid, not real blood) that a woman releases during her cycle. Check out the video for all the details! Continue Reading →

New Study: Vulva and Vagina Perceptions

Our research team is working on a new study. Please see below to learn more or to take it. Thanks! —

Our research team at The Center for Sexual Health Promotion is conducting a study on men’s and women’s behaviors, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about vulvas and vaginas. Although a great deal of research has been conducted on vulvovaginal health, less remains known about people’s perceptions about their own and others’ vulvas and vaginas. Continue Reading →

Sexy Arts & Crafts: Felted Vulva

Last week, I was delighted to discover that some very dear friends of mine sent me this wonderful felted vulva they made, all the way from Maryland.  If you’re unfamiliar with this type of craft, it describes “a process called wet felting, where the natural wool fibre is stimulated by friction and lubricated by moisture” (Wikipedia). Giggedy. Then a needle or needles is used to sculpt the wool into fun shapes like this one. I love that you can see the clitoris, peeking out from underneath the hood! If you’d like to buy a kit to make your very own, felt vulva, contact them at Continue Reading →
