15 Things You (Maybe) Didn’t Know About Vaginas

I recently read Dr Lissa Rankin’s book (What’s Up Down There: Questions  You’d Only Ask Your Gynecologist If She Was Your Best Friend) and really enjoyed it – it’s written exactly how I tend to talk to a friend, so it felt like less of a book and more of reading emails from my best friend. Enough about that book – I’m working on a review of it anyway. So, with that book still hot on my mind, I was pleasantly surprised when a few friends posted a link to a list from Dr Rankin on 15 Crazy Things About Vaginas. I hesitate to call these facts “crazy things” – I would probably describe them as more interesting or cool. Some of them I knew before I read the book (and I would certainly hope I knew some of them since I do teach about sex!), some more after reading the book, and I was still happily surprised by a few more – I always love learning new things. 16 Signs Of A Sex Geek

“Sex geek” or “sex nerd” is an identification used by many people in the sex-positive community to describe their unusual, academic, and/or voracious interest in sexual knowledge. This interest extends well beyond that which would simply improve one’s own sex life. While clearly this kind of scholarship would likely lead to better sex for the individual, sex geeks like to learn about sex for the sake of learning about sex. Sex educator Reid Mihalko has one particularly holistic definition on his website, complete with equally nerdy three-way Venn diagram. Like people who are really into math, sports, movies, or French literature, sex geeks are just wired a little differently. Continue Reading →

L.A. Residents Have More Sex Than Other Americans

A new sex survey released by Trojan reveals that Angelenos have sex 135 times a year, with Houston as the closest runner-up (125 times a year). Married couples reported higher sexual satisfaction than single folks, though singles apparently had sex with greater frequency. Follow the link for more interesting tidbits, though I’m taking this information with a grain of salt until I see more about the study’s methods. Follow us on Twitter @mysexprofessor. The New Year’s Kiss

For Valentine’s day, my Special Lady Friend and I went through my extensive collection of rom-coms and decided on a classic: When Harry Met Sally.  Wading through the late 80′s fashion, Billy Crystal’s folksy wisdom, and Meg Ryan’s pastrami-plastering fake orgasm, we noted how important the New Year’s Eve kiss was to them and started to wonder how the tradition of kissing your sweetheart at the stroke of midnight got started. Sex Trivia #2: An Average Sized Penis is Not as Big as You Think

Many people (wrongly)  believe that an average sized erect penis is 7 or more inches. No, no, no!, I want to say, and often do. Most studies of erect penis length come in with average sizes in the 5 to 6 inch range. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine examined data from two studies and found that the average erect length of the penis was 5.3 inches long. So, don’t let all those sneaky penis enlargement emails fool you, as they’re the ones often claiming that the average penis size is much larger (sneaky, because then it makes lots of men feel small). Sex Trivia #1: A Vulva is Not a Car

A vulva is not a car. Rather, “vulva” refers to the outside parts of women’s genitals: the clitoris, clitoral hood, labia majora (outer lips), labia minora (inner lips), and the vaginal opening, also called the introitus. The word “vagina” refers to the birth canal, even though not all women give birth or do so through their vaginas. Who cares? Well, I do. Continue Reading →
