Wedding Season Reflection Part 1: The Power Vested in Us

This summer was an epic one for weddings. Many people I knew tied the knot this summer (including two of my favorite sex bloggers. Congrats, Jeana and Emily!). My partner and I attended six from May to September, and I thought I would share a few stories and lessons in the next few blog posts that I learned from the half-dozen ceremonies, receptions, and the one crazy carnival I experienced. Today I would like to contribute a story from one of my favorite wedding moments thus far. Continue Reading →

A Fairy Tale Film About Same Sex Marriage

The fairy tale is an art form flexible and abstract enough to be repurposed for just about anything. This is exactly what happened when Middle Tennessee State University professor Bob Pondillo filmed “The Miracles on Honey Bee Hill,” a short film using actors aged 8-9 years old and utilizing the tropes of fairy tales to explore the issue of same sex marriage. However, the film’s reception was controversial, as local Republican politicians were quick to decry the use of child actors as exploitative, despite the fact that the director took every precaution: letting the parents/guardians read the script, having them on the premises while the film was made, and signing releases. The main politician protesting the film has apparently not seen it. I wonder whether these people would be so quick to question the exploitative potential of, say, a pro-life protestor bringing children to a protest site. Continue Reading →

Obama Endorsed Gay Marriage…So What?

This afternoon I received a phone call from my father in which he asked me, his voice oozing excitement, if I had heard what the president said. “Yeah, Obama endorsed gay marriage, right?” Apparently my nonchalance was apparent, as my dad wasn’t satisfied. “Well, what do you think?” Of course he asked me not only as his daughter, but as his queer, activist, blogging daughter, so I knew I had to give him a good answer. Barbara Bush Supports Same Sex Marriage (VIDEO)

Just as Cindy McCain and Laura Bush have voiced their support for same-sex marriage in the post-campaign era (well, Cindy McCain then changed her tune in relation to DADT), former President George W Bush’s daughter, Barbara, has now stepped out to lend her support for marriage equality in NYC. While I think that we should always be grateful when people come forward to support equal rights in any arena, is it so wrong to wish that more close family members (e.g., spouses, children, parents) of prominent politicians would come forward while their family members are in office or campaigning? It seems it would paint both parties in a more nuanced light and spark more a conversation about important human issues. Anyone else feel this way? Continue Reading →

You Must Must Must Listen to Zach Wahls

Zach Wahls – an impressive speaker and apparently only 19 years old – speaks about being raised by two moms in Iowa. Eloquent doesn’t begin to describe this, nor does passionate, but they are good starts. Follow us on Twitter @mysexprofessor and make friends with us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/mysexprofessor

A Gay Tax

Facebook has recently joined the ranks of a very small number of companies reimbursing their partnered GLB employees who receive health insurance benefits for their significant others. You see when heterosexuals get insurance for their spouses the income going towards those benefits is not taxed. But because of DOMA GLB employees are basically paying a tax to be in a same-sex relationship. According to the NY Times’ Tara Siegel Bernard: Continue Reading →

Beyond Marriage

Same-sex marriage. You normally only hear 2 sides to this debate. Either you’re for it because you think everyone should have the right to marry the one they love or you’re against it for religious or bigoted reasons. It wasn’t until I was in college and took a queer history class with a famous gay historian that I learned of another reason people were against same-sex marriage. Everyone in the class had wrongly assumed this great activist gay man who was in the White Night Riots and protested with ACT UP was for same-sex marriage. Continue Reading →

Anne Rice Supports Same Sex Marriage Rights, Leaves Catholic Church.

I’ve never read any of Anne Rice’s work. My only connection at all to her work is that, when I was in college, I babysat the children of this terrific couple. One time, the dad surprised the mom with a surprise trip to New Orleans for some type of Anne Rice dinner (she was a fan of her work). And now, I’m feeling like Anne Rice is all shades of awesome due to her decision to articulate why she left the Catholic Church, including certain positions they have taken against condom use as it relates to HIV, abortions even under life-saving circumstances for the mother, and same-sex marriage rights. I found the article on Jezebel, though apparently it’s from an interview she recently gave for ABC. Continue Reading →

Ben & Jerry’s Renames Ice Cream As Hubby Hubby in Support of Same Sex Marriage

Ben & Jerry’s renames their Chubby Hubby ice cream as “Hubby Hubby” in support of the legalization of same sex marriage in Vermont. At this moment, I love them more than ever. Can’t wait to buy some and eat it with a glass of chocolate milk on the side. Yum. [Ben & Jerry's] Continue Reading →
