All About Strap-ons: An Interview with Louise Bourchier

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of attending a fantastic presentation by Louise Bourchier on strap-ons, which was hosted by Pleasure Forum Australia. I had no idea there was so much to know about the subject. Louise gave such an informative and entertaining presentation, I couldn’t wait to interview her about her expertise. Kate: Tell me, how did you come to know so much about strap-ons? Louise: Well, I guess I got interested in strap-ons a few years ago when I was expanding my sexual horizons. Continue Reading →

DIY Travel Dildo: first failed sex toy attempt involved airplane peanuts (NSFW)

A few months ago I had an assignment from Time Out Chicago magazine to make a do-it-yourself (DIY) sex toy. While sex toys and gadgets can be fun, there is a particular satisfaction that comes with making your own. As I had recently written about food-related sex play in their Food & Sex issue (click here to read the article or to see photos of me with bananas, cucumbers and strawberries), we wanted to go for something other than the “use a cucumber for a dildo” routine. After perusing the internet for ideas, skimming books, talking with friends and consulting Searah from the amazing Chicago-based sex boutique Early to Bed, I narrowed down my list of ideas to several DIY sex toys that I thought would be relatively manageable and somewhat photogenic in case we wanted to show the actual toys in TOC. Then life happened. Continue Reading →

Taffy Tickler Dildo from Adam & Eve

Every now and then a sex toy comes along that sparks my curiosity (the We-Vibe, Sasi and Lelo “Bo” are recent examples). Most recently, I’ve been impressed with the Taffy Tickler dildo. Years ago, glass dildos made headlines all on their own. In fact, women and men still write me with questions about glass dildos, wanting to learn more about their advantages (e.g., how you can warm or cool them by running them under warm or cool water, how they are easy to clean under a faucet or in a dishwasher, and how they offer firm stimulation during sexual play). What’s cool about the Taffy Tickler is that it’s a new level of glass dildo. Continue Reading →

Do It Yourself Sex Toys and Lube

Time Out Chicago’s Do-It-Yourself (DIY) issue  has hit the news stands – or your mailbox, if you’re one of our lovely subscribers. Though there are tons more things to find in the actual issue, you can read about a couple of sex-related items that I contributed to the issue such as the DIY Travel Dildo and the DIY Lube. It took a lot of practice – as well as some expert advice from sex shop owner Searah, of Early to Bed in Chicago but the toy I ended up making was easy to assemble and makes for a good travel toy for those who are shy at TSA. The DIY issue has many useful non-sex related tips as well. One of my favorites was some info about how to clone your favorite pants, something I have long wanted to do. Continue Reading →

MSP Q&A: What Does Sex Feel Like?

Recently on Yahoo Questions, a young woman had a question about whether sex would feel good (when she eventually has it) given that she recently tried using a dildo and found that it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. The original Q&A can be found on the Yahoo Questions web site. This was my reply:

As someone who studies sexuality as well as what people do with sex toys, this is what I can tell you:

While some women enjoy using dildos, not all do. In fact, women more often use vibrators than they use dildos. Even when they do use vibrators, women  more often use vibrators on their clitoris (which is on the vulva, an outside part of a woman’s genitals). Continue Reading →
