Talking vajayjays with Tyra

Okay, I’ve been holding out. Last month, as some of my friends and colleagues know, I taped an episode of The Tyra Banks Show in NYC. This wasn’t just any episode, either – it was an episode about one of my favorite topics: the vagina and vulva. This episode, titled "What’s Up Down There?" will air on Monday November 5. Check your local listings or this part of her site to see when it airs in your city.

There were several exciting parts to the day of taping, including the fact that Tyra taped an interview with Barack Obama while we were in the building (his green room was only doors down from mine, but the secret service made us stay in the green room so our paths never crossed). But even more exciting was working with committed producers and Tyra herself to develop an episode with much-needed information for women. I was incredibly impressed with Tyra Banks’ commitment to airing important information about women’s sexual health on television. I was also impressed with her production team –  Kareen Gunning and Dan Fitzpatrick worked tirelessly to find out which topics were particularly important for women to learn more about.

You can view a preview of this episode: go to Tyra’s site (click here) and then click on the Monday Nov 5 episode – and yes, that is me with curled hair and a vulva puppet sitting on my lap, a puppet which I bought some time ago at Good Vibrations in Berkeley, California. While we’re on the topic of my curled hair, Tyra’s team did an incredible job making me up for the show – see the before and after photos after the jump.

This is me relaxing in the green room BEFORE the make-up and hair stuff (above) and below, there I am after lots of make-up and hair curling. Check out the show to see how it looks on TV.

I was so excited to hear about this (on perezhilton.com)! Not only because I think women should spend more time becoming acquainted with their vaginas, but also because in a lot of ways, you continue to serve as an intellectual role model for me (long after you were my TA way back in the day) and I hope to, some day, follow in your career footsteps in educating college students (and others) about sexuality and sexual health.

OMG!!!! I totally should have taught her brick wall waterfall…. but I didn’t! What a wasted opportunity.

And yes, Magical Christine (as I like to think of her) is correct – they usually cake the make-up on you to emphasis features and somehow it looks more normal on TV.
