I’m a big fan of condom vending machines. They allow convenient, anonymous purchases of vital safer sex supplies and sometimes, some exciting extras. While these condom vending machines themselves are not as exciting as the ones that sell cock rings or vibrators, their locations are particularly noteworthy.
I found the yellow machine (with the iconic red HIV/AIDS ribbon) on a busy street corner in the French Concession neighborhood of Shanghai. Buying condoms from this machine might not be as anonymous, but I think its public location has stigma-reducing and awareness-raising potential. My favorite find was the blue and white machine, which was in the public bathroom of a senior citizens’ park (also in Shanghai)! With STI rates becoming more apparent among the over-65s, I’m delighted to see their safer sex needs are being attended to.
