One of my fellow journalistas recently sent a link my way pertaining to the funding cuts that Planned Parenthood is currently facing, and after reading Michaela’s post I thought MSP would be an excellent place to share an additional link on the subject matter.
Posted on the online version of Women’s Health, there is an article on their homepage that encourages women to take a stand and support Planned Parenthood.
Not only does the article give you the rundown on the current debate, it directs readers to a link at the bottom of the article – where supporters can sign an open letter to Washington officials as well as make a donation to Planned Parenthood.
Working out my frustrations…
Obviously the controversy around abortion is something that is never going to go away, and in my opinion – that is OK. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions (hence why the terms pro-life and pro-choice are useful, they aid in the differing of various points of view).
But what baffles me about this Planned Parenthood debate is the fact that it is clearly stated that the government money Planned Parenthood receives funds information about safe sex and family planning, as well as pelvic and breast exams.
(Not to mention there is a law which prohibits Planned Parenthood to use federal dollars to perform abortions)
Yet knowing our government looks past the facts and is still willing to cut funding and deprive women of their access to birth control, HIV testing, and cancer screenings literally blows my mind.
Anyways, before I get too worked up and continue with my rant – if you haven’t yet, check out the articles and get informed. Although I issue a forewarning, being “in the know” may have serious side effects (such as high blood pressure, frustration and disappointment in your government).
