Sex In Class

I teach about sex. In class. But there isn’t sex in class. I know that sex in public is fun for some people (personally, I’m much too shy), and I even had a friend write her dissertation on sex in libraries (as in, people having sex there), but sex in class? Yikes!

Apparently, it’s happened.

In Baltimore, three teenagers (all ages 15-17) are facing charges for having sex on school grounds…while they were in class. Apparently the teens were having sex in an auditorium, which makes me feel a little bit better. I teach classes of less than 50 students, and was trying to imagine students engaging in any sex act while I was teaching and somehow not knowing. The article that I linked to also mentions that there may be a tape of the act, which bothers me as these are minors in question.

What are your thoughts? What should happen to these teens?

    I think it’s a bit ridiculous. What happened before the days of 24 hour
    news and people getting all worked up about random acts around the
    world? There once was a time when we didn’t know about these things, and
    it didn’t affect us then. Why do we now feel like the world is one
    community, all with the same values, and then are shocked when something
    not really THAT shocking happens?

    Are we all so totally naive as to think that these things (and far worse) don’t happen day in and day out all over the world?

    On the scale of heinous crimes I think this pretty far down on the list.

    In an ideal world they would be educated a little more about sex, just in case there’s anything they didn’t know, and the rest of the community would understand and accept that these things happen and get on with their lives.

    In our real world, there’ll be religious nut bars screaming about it, people demanding that the school be prosecuted, parents ravenous for someones blood…

    Teens have sex, and they take drugs, and they drink… nothing has changed and nothing will change without education and people viewing these instances for what they are; random acts that really shouldn’t bother us because there’s far worse in the world than teens getting it on a little too early for our liking.

    This really bothers me.  They are hormone-riddled teens being, well horny teens!  I mean it wasn’t appropriate but I can’t say that I don’t know people who did similar when I was in school.  In the grand scheme of things…who really cares?
