It’s not news that South Africa has a serious rape problem. It is news, however, how many men report that they have raped a woman or a girl – a shocking 37% of men surveyed in a province of South Africa that includes Johannesburg (with about 7% saying that they have participated in gang rape). The Associated Press (AP) report attributes much of the rape and violence to the history of so many men and women having been subjected to violence under apartheid, and to systems of impunity.
