Drawing race and gender

According to this article from the Louisville Courier-Journal’s Pam Platt, political cartoonists may be facing unique challenges when it comes to drawing Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. To what extent are they/should they be sensitive to race and gender, while still doing their job to use cartoons as social commentary?
