Dan Savage Comments on Obama Making an It Gets Better Video

In the above video clip, sex columnist, author and slogger Dan Savage, who created the It Gets Better Project, comments on CNN about President Barack Obama’s It Gets Better video. The video – consistent with other IGBP videos – is aimed at helping gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth to understand that they have done nothing wrong and, if anyone is taunting them or bullying them at school, it is the bullies who are at fault. He also talks about the kinds of resources that are and are not often available to GBLT youth who need them.

Also, a note to CNN: it’s not “Bloomingdale, Indiana” (like the store), it’s Bloomington, Indiana.

I’m sorry to seem pessimistic, but politicians have a tendency to jump on a story and become involved when they think it will benefit them. As was said, actions speak louder than words.
Enough with the well-spoken speeches Obama, we’ve heard it all before. Now it’s time to force real CHANGE in ways that actually matter.

Unfortunately, I don’t have much faith in Obama anymore. I was on that wave of hope like the rest of the world when he was elected. And I have to say that I personally believe that he has done more to disillusion and disenfranchise the youth of America than any president before him. It’s one thing to act poorly in office. It’s quite another to build up the hope to such a level and then back-track on almost everything promised.

This battle will not be won by hoping that Obama will do something good or hoping that the rusty (religious, corrupt, siezed-up) cogs of government will somehow miraculously start moving on this issue. It will be won by the American people standing up together and saying that it is no longer acceptable to victimize LGBT citizens.

This is something the people have to fight for themselves. And by that I mean protesting, demanding local government takes action where needed, changing policies one by one, boycotts, arguments, debates and more.

As always, don’t trust the big government to do anything sensible in favor of the people. They’re not in their positions to do that, they’re in their positions because they like the glory, the cash, and the recognition.
Remember the snitch in school? The teachers pet and suck-up who likes to feel important and valued? That’s where politicians come from.
