Product Review: Renew Toy Revitalizing Cleanser

Our friends over at Good Vibrations recently sent me a new product to review. It’s like Christmas all over again! The Renew Toy Revitalization Cleanser is such a handy little thing! Forget about interrupting sexy times to run to the bathroom to clean a toy- a swift pump of this little spray bottle and you’re good to go! This comes in handy especially if you share a bathroom- I can’t tell you how awkward it is to try to clean a sex toy in a dormitory bathroom. You get all kinds of weird looks.

What I love:

  • It’s natural! Who wants to clean their toys with chemicals?
  • It’s paraben free.
  • It smells great- but not too strongly. There’s nothing I hate more than overly floral scented cleansing products, and this has just the right amount of fragrance.
  • The price! At $8 for a 2oz bottle that will last you at least a month, the price is definitely right.

What I don’t love:

  • It’s a bit sticky…it felt like I needed to do an extra water rinse after using the spray. Perhaps I used too much?
  • Though it cuts down on cleaning time, it isn’t all that more convenient. After spraying, you still need a clean cloth to wipe off all of the liquid. I wish this came in a wipe!

How it rates:

Price: 5

Ease of Use: 3

Safety: 5

Adorability: 5

Stealth: 5

Total: 23/25

Overall, this is a great, innovative product. I definitely recommend it (until they come up with a wipe, in which case I recommend that instead)!

Just wanted to weigh in – I work retail in a sex store, and we get asked about toy cleaners a lot. Here’s what we say: largely, they’re a waste of money. Mild soap and water on a washcloth is all you need; if you’re embarrassed to clean your adult product in a public bathroom, then bring the washcloth back to your room. The other thing I don’t like is that the ingredients in this particular product are not so great from a women’s health perspective. You have to be careful about things labeled “organic” or “natural,” because those may be oils or food-based products that can either alter the body’s pH levels, increasing your risk of yeast infections, or products that can create a non-breathable film over the skin which may trap bacteria or microbes and lead to infections. We often encounter this problem with lubricants, but it seems that even toy cleansers may involve similar risks.

So when it comes to toy cleaning, stick with the good old scrub and rinse. And when it comes to lubrication, stick with either silicone (hypoallergenic and inert, so completely body-safe) or a water-based that is glycerine, propylene glycol, and parabens free, and be wary of “natural” or “organic” labels which may have oils or extracts that could affect your body’s chemistry and your sexual health. Get the facts, and be safe! :)
