Kinsey Confidential podcast: Am I gay?

Sexual orientation remains a controversial and emotionally charged issue for some women and men in the United States, as well as in other countries around the world. In part this is fueled by misunderstandings about sexual orientation and people who identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual. In addition, a person’s sexual orientation and how it develops and unfolds throughout life remain a bit mysterious to researchers – we have many questions still left to answer in our quest to understand how people come to feel sexually attracted to or interested in people of their same sex, another sex, or not interested sexually in anyone at all. Recently a listener asked us this question at Kinsey Confidential:
I’m attracted to both men and women, but slightly more to men. I masturbate to both, but more recently mostly to men. Continue Reading →

Can one masturbate too much?

Some researchers might say no – well, at least within reason (it may be "too much" if you are masturbating to the point of hurting your genitals, or if it is getting in the way of work/school/relationships and causing you distress). But other than that, get out the lube! We’ve known for some time now that frequent ejaculation when one is young (whether from partner sex or solo masturbation) was associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer as one ages… but this study specifically looked at the masturbation aspect and found a markedly reduced risk of prostate cancer among frequent masturbators. Vaginal Pump: Sex Toys for Women

Someone sent me a link to this vaginal pump (pictured above) listed on Amazon. While penis pumps and clitoral pumps are fairly commonplace, vaginal pumps are not. Penis pumps have sometimes been used to assist with erections and other times are just used for play. In 2000, a very specific brand of clitoral pump, the Eros Clitoral Therapy Device, was cleared by the FDA as a treatment for female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD). But a vaginal pump? Well, personally, any time I think of air being forcibly suctioned one way or the other in relation to the vagina, I have to wonder about safety. Continue Reading →

Thinking With Your Dick #4

(Check out previous TWYD installments here.)
Debby: Check out this article about a guy who was caught having vaccuum cleaner sex. Dick: i dont really get it. was the vacuum on? if so, i guess i can understand why this would seem like a decent idea. it would suck the hell out of you, but it doesnt really sound like the case from this description. it sounded more like he was humping the side of it or something. This week’s columns

In this week’s In&Out column in Time Out Chicago magazine, I answer questions about the following topics:
- the correct verbage for teabagging
- an ex-boyfriend who blogged about their sex life
- premature ejaculation
What are you waiting for? Read the entire column online on Time Out Chicago’s web site. In my Loveville column in Velocity Weekly, this week I am answering questions about:
- a woman who keeps playing with her toys in spite of having a boyfriend
- a church leader who talks to and texts with female congregants more than his wife would like
- an unsatisfied woman who is wondering if she should love for fulfillment elsewhere
Intriguing, right? Read the full column on Velocity’s web site. Continue Reading →

Lubricants and toys… in a Walmart/CVS/Walgreens near you?

That’s right – lubricants and sex toys personal massagers are becoming increasingly mainstream. For several years they have been available through a variety of web sites such as Amazon and Drugstore and now through increasingly mainstream stores such as Walmart, CVS, Target and Walgreens. Not all of these types of shops carry the "personal massagers" but some do and it is likely that the US will eventually catch up with some other developed countries that already offer vibratring sex toys in large retail chains. Several years ago, a student of mine studied abroad in Japan and showed me digital photos he took in a Target-like shop that had regular old items not that far from Rabbit-like vibrators. Thanks to reader Michael for passing on the link to this must-read Newsweek article about the mainstreaming of lubricants, toys and other sexual health products. Continue Reading →

How can a woman orgasm during intercourse? Is the clitoris involved?

Responding to a recent post related to female orgasm, reader Marcey wrote, “As a “lay” sex educator (pardon the pun), I talk about the legs of the clitoris embedded behind the walls of the vagina. As the first third of the vaginal walls become tight due to sexual arousal, it brings the legs closer to the penis or whatever is inserted into the vagina, thereby increasing the chances of them being stimulated enough to achieve orgasm through intercourse. I also say that only one out of five women can experience orgasm that way. Of course, I add that not being able to achieve orgasm through intercourse does not make her any less of a woman. Am I correct in my assessment of one of the ways a woman can achieve orgasm through intercourse?” Continue Reading →

Superman position: A Fun Sex Position?

Okay, a few things:

1. I am all for variety when it comes to sex. 2. I think it’s kind of funny when people combine pop culture and sex (how many men out there have wanted to re-enact George Costanza’s desire to have a sandwich during sex?)
3. It can be good to explore different positions for both partner sex and solo sex. Continue Reading →
